Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl

Check out this video of the three legendary drummers taking turns to play their drum solos followed by all three of them joining in. Their techniques are amazing, see how Vinnie Colaiuta creates a solo with just the snare, hi hat and bass drum. Woohoo! Go Vinnie!

Exams are almost over for me and I'm eagerly looking forward to our jam sessions again.

Recording Session

Hey all, this is long overdue with all the work piling up. The recording sessions went smoothly without much glitches I would say, but it was a mad rush as usual with a tight schedule to adhere to. We took 2 days for the instruments and 2 days for the vocals for both "Better Days" and "It's only you". Many thanks to Adrian and Chan, the friendly recording engineers at Backbeats Studios, who did a great job in making us sound nicer. Both songs received positive feedback after being played in the Prometheus production. Here's some pics from the recording session.

Smash Inc - Live It Up DVD & Tees

Our "Live It Up" DVD is finally here! It features the music video shot by our lovely MOXXIE crew and friends from SCI as well as some of the live footage of the Launch of YDC @ Heerens and not forgetting the 'behind the scenes' recording process. We also received a present from MOXXIE which was our band tee shirts beautifully designed by Leroy and post edited by the team.

We shall take this opportunity to thank Fiona, Yu Zheng, Diana & the rest of MOXXIE as well as the support crew from SCI for making our music video shoot process a professional yet enjoyable one. It was great working with all of you despite the mad rush of having to change locations and setting up at each new location. We truly appreciate the effort.

National Day 06 Gig @ Yew Tee

We injected energy to the lovely Yew Tee neighbourhood on an early National Day morning. There was quite a large crowd who were all decked proudly in red and doing their part for the nation by participating in the annual walk around the constituency. It was quite a sight to see so many red shirts walking, so much so that if you wore some other colour you stood out like a sore thumb.

Well, we were not in red and white, but we had fun on stage nonetheless. It was interesting to see a drastically different demographics in the crowd, something we were not quite used to. The emcee even surprised us with a request for a chinese song.

The Guest of Honour for the event was Mr Yeo Chow Tong, our former transport minister. He was very vibrant and enthusiastic about having us around. Seems like we are the 1st live band to ever play for their event in their 41 years of National Day Observance Ceremony. Yeah, it's about time the local music scene opened up.

Mirage 2006

Mirage 06 is an inaugural welcome dinner for NTU Hall Freshmen. A gig with the largest attendance so far, with about 1500 NTU freshies eager to start their semester. What a way to mark their 1st day of school. To us, it was more of a reunion gig since jeff and ivan had just come back from US and Indonesia and we had barely enough time to practise.

Despite the lack of practise, we put up a tight set with 'Shinin' and recently revamped 'She's the One'. We had changed the outro to a Indo/Java-ish kinda rhythm to suit Ivan's chimes solo. It was just a refreshing way to end the song. Besides, that's where the fun of music-making is; to infuse your own creativity and talents into the song to make it unique.

We were right about 'This Love'; It was a definite crowd pleaser and many were singing along. The best part was people were body surfing to it! Never thought I wld see that in NTU, but well, life's full of surprises.

JASH 06 Mirage

Hey, we'll be playing @ JASH 06 Mirage, an inaugural welcome dinner for NTU Hall Residents on 7th August 06 Nanyang Auditorium. Unfortunately, its only extended to hall residents at a fee. Honestly, I dun even know why they are holding this event. But we have been invited to play, so we're gonna reorganise ourselves now that jeff and ivan are back in town and jam our hearts out onstage. Dbl O is one of the event sponsors i believe, and alcohol will be served in NY Auditorium. Cant imagine that in 16 weeks time we will be sitting for exams in that same venue. Gives me the chills ... Pls pls pls take care of yourselves and dun get all wasted and end up lying on the floor at Quad. Its an ugly scene.

Time to pick up our instruments again

Hey jeff, we're all missing your presence dude. We're gonna start jamming soon and try to come up with some new material so we can start recording when u're back haha yeah all our freaking exams are finally over woohoo! Seems like you guys learnt in the improvisation class that you must set a theme in order to improvise. In this case, we should set a theme to the songs we try to write and then work our way around it. I always wondered if its easier to come up with the melody first then fit lyrics into it or the other way round. anyhow, we'll keep u updated if we have new song ideas.

on a separate note, 'Clean' was truly enjoyable to watch. It din feel like a students' production at all and the satisfaction of hearing 'Shining' being played in the background was simply rewarding. Hope we get more of such opportunities in future.

Cultural Night @ Hall 7

Hey! here's some pics from hall 7 cultural night yesterday. It was our last performance for this semester but we'll soon be in action again after exams. It was fun to perform in front of so many familiar faces. Started the set with our rock instrumental and the crash cymbal stand came loose after a few mins into the set, I must have smashed it too hard :P Jeffrey thought I intentionally angled the cymbal towards me hah but I cldnt even hit it after it fell off.

There was this surge of energy the moment we walked up the stage, adrenalin rush probably. Anw we injected that energy level into our performance on stage and did our best to entertain the audience. Jeffrey stood on the bass amp for the intro of 'Shining on Me'. In fact, he was on there for so long I thought he din wanna come down haha

Yep, still there.

Lawrence had something up his sleeves last night man. Before we started, I walked to the stage and saw the chair near him and away from the drumset. I asked "Can I use the chair?", half expecting him to agree. But he said "I need it." So ok, I took another chair wondering if he's gonna sit on it during the set. Halfway into 'Shining on Me', our dear guitarist took the chair out and surprised the audience including myself as he stood on it and extended his arms out in a 'flying' position during the quiet bridge. Too bad i dun have any pics of that.

Notice the wooden little chair at the back ;)

I think this blog is great!!! Color, layout, pictures... perfect. Thanks to our designer Kelvin and Chermane (hope i spell it correctly).

Smash INC. Well, well, what can i say. Definitely the best band that i've ever joined. Creative forces welling up inside us, waiting to explode into songs... If only we have more time to jam.... schoolwork is a pain. If only i had flung my O levels. I would have plunge into full time musician. Haha... I'm lookig forward to greater moments and gigs ahead. Live It Up CD Design

Hey guys, here's the CD cover designed by Leroy. Some nice Adobe photoshop effects there by our vocalist. I pronounce it as Er-doh-bee but he thinks it is Ah-doh-bay. But anyhow, I think it's quite a cool design for our CD cover, though I dunno why there are 4 cherries hanging off a vine. I suspect it has something to do with one of our early proposed band names "black horse and a cherry tree". OR they could be something else? hmm .. will find out from him soon. Lemme know what you guys think bout it.

Our Blog is Born!

Hey guys, we finally got a blog up and going woo hoo! Many thanks to Chermaine who set up this blog for us; rest of us being blog illiterate wld be hopeless at setting up one.

For the benefit of those who don't know, we wrote an original composition for Red Cross Youth Donor Club as a theme song and we played at the official launch at Heeren's on Sat 4th Mar 06. It was an excellent experience playing a gig outside Heeren's and we played our hearts out in all 3 sets no doubt. Even though the sound system was a little let down and the sun was scorching so badly I perspired throughout every set, I still enjoyed playing our originals and introducing our new songs to the public. Many thanks to our family, loved ones, friends, moxxie, YDC volunteers and also our new found groupies(?;P) who were there to support us and cheer us on. Thanks also to the emcee who was so generous with his kind introductions.

I'm eagerly awaiting to listen to our recordings we did @ SCI for 'shining on me' and 'live it up' and also to see the video we filmed for 'live it up'. Kudos to Huimin, Tian Yun, Xiao Ting, Alethea, Jian Ming and Benny for recording and mixing our songs. Will try to post the songs n maybe some clips when i get them.
